All producers and importers of electronics in the Netherlands have had to comply with the regeling afgedankte elektrische en elektronische apparatuur (AEEA), the national legislation that falls under the European Commission’s Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment (WEEE) directive. This also applies to producers of solar panels and inverters.
Under this directive, they need to have a Producer Responsibility which means that they are required to arrange the collection and recycling of their panels. The OPEN Foundation has fulfilled this obligation on their behalf since 1 March 2021.
The Solar Energy Recycling Netherlands Foundation (ZRN) advocates on your behalf in the OPEN Foundation. To do this effectively, ZRN’s Board appoints a Board Member to the OPEN Foundation’s Board, whose portfolio includes solar panels. ZRN, whose Board represents all areas of the sector, acts as an advisor to this Board Member. Solar panel producers may join ZRN free of charge.
